Did Rostron take a risk? Empty Did Rostron take a risk?

When the wireless message went out- the RMS Carpathia answered the call. But was it to big a risk- What baffles me is how the Carpathia managed to make it through at least 3 icebergs on her way to the Titanic some 58 miles away-

Did Rostron take a risk? RMS-Carpathia-2

Carpathia- maiden voyage- 1902- sunk by u-boat 1918

He gave many orders that night and even posted extra lookouts to spot the bergs- Its amazing never the less that he was able to make it to the survivors of the Titanic without ending up in the same situation himself.

Did Rostron take a risk? Ar

Capt. Rostron- RMS Carpathia

What do you think- Do you think he took to great a risk- or do you think the risk was worth it?

What He did:
1. Have slings ready to hoist people up
2. Have oil bags in lavatories for rough seas
3. Have all steam diverted 2 her 2 8 cylinder engines
4. convert dining rooms and all other extra rooms to dorms
5. all other avalable rooms were to go to the survivors- He went as far as give up his own rooms
6. have coffee, tea, whiskey and food ready
7. Have stewards in halls to divert passengers back to there rooms
8. Post extra lookouts
9. post a steward at the wireless room to bring any messages to the bridge
10. Make sure every member of the crew was on duty.
last thing he did- prey

Carpathias top speed was estamated at 14 kts- However that night he had pushed he to 17kts.

i agree it was surprising he was able to navigate around all the ice burgs, Although he did have the knowledge that it was a dangerous situation too
